The Value In Journal Writing

Journal writing is a voyage to the interior.”

For the past two and half years, journaling is one of those wonderful simple strategies that I have incorporated into my daily life.

Now you might be wondering what could anyone possibly be writing about, every single day. I asked myself that same question when I started. Furthermore, at the time, I also felt that I did not have important or valuable things to write about. What erroneous thinking on my part!

At first, when I attempted to journal, my journal entries were more like grocery lists; “Today, I did…” ” Today I saw…” “Tomorrow I need to…” you get the picture.

With time I found the experience to be most enjoyable and rejuvenating. Soon, journaling allowed me to go in the world within and to make very interesting discoveries about self.

Today, journal writing for me is an important personal development strategy that allows me to grow. It is a time for reflection, a space to ask the more important questions about self and life, and an opportunity to do a mental and emotional dump. An outpouring of emotions can leave you feeling relieved of stress and more peaceful. There is considerable evidence that writing has huge health benefits. It is a great way to unwind after the day.

I like to journal twice a day, in the morning and at night.

Early in my day I like to set my intentions for what my day will look like and what I want to accomplish. I follow that up with whatever personal development theme I am currently working on; for example: courage, beliefs, change, and so on.

At the end of my day I like to reflect on the key points of the last 18 hours or so. These are not necessarily major happenings, but rather any AHA/insights that came up, meaningful conversations had, interesting things that I read and so on. I also believe it is very important that folks take a minute or two to note 5 successes for the day. It does not matter how big or small. What matters is that you start acknowledging yourself for the things you do well. Too many individuals are quick to put themselves down for the things they do not get done or do poorly. Yet, these same people ignore giving themselves credit. Recognizing your strengths and abilities are key to growing, not only your self esteem and confidence, but to creating your wealth.

I believe that writing about our day is something very important that should be taught to children at a young age. You could have a young child do a drawing of his/her day and explain the drawing to you. It is not about knowing your child’s secrets but rather have them see themselves through a clearer lens. Journaling at any age allows one to gain clarity.

I have found journaling to be a critical activity for anyone who wants to pursue the areas of personal development and self-improvement. It is about getting a deeper understanding of self and of others. It allows you to sort out issues and solve problems, personal and business. The entire writing process provides a forum where you can learn to grow and accept not only yourself but others as well. Journaling increases the individual’s level of personal responsibility.

Journaling is a form of record keeping. It is a way to reread about ourselves and to see how far we have come. We can recognize how our beliefs have evolved over time. Writing is a building block to our life story.

There are many kinds of journals you can keep. The type and format you choose does not matter, as long as you start the process. You can be writing a few simple lines or several pages.

Some folks choose to keep a general journal. Others will choose to keep specific journals such as dream journals, reading logs, health and healing journals, networking opportunities and ideas.

Personally, for the past nine months, apart from a general type of journal, I have kept a Gratitude journal. Once or perhaps several times a day I write down what I am currently grateful for. This simple activity has had a profound impact for me. Each day I become more aware of the incredible blessings that I receive. I see the miracle in the smaller things. Being grateful brings joy to my life.

The very successful business people that I have come to know in network marketing have all kept journals and continue to do so. Journal writing has allowed them to identify their core desires, skills, interests, and values. They are able to break down problems and arrive at solutions. New insights are gained. New connections are made. In fact, journaling has helped them create more wealth in their life.

Whatever your chosen path may be, I highly recommend journal writing as a daily practice.

Top Startup Tips By International Entrepreneur, David Cleevely

Chairman of the world-leading Cambridge Wireless network and an adviser to successive UK governments, Dr Cleevely helped revolutionise broadband delivery in Cambridge. He founded telecoms consultancy Analysys in 1985 and has founded many other influential technology businesses including 3WayNetworks, Abcam and spectrum monitoring company CRFS. He was a co-founder of Cambridge Network and in 2009 became founding chairman for Cambridge Universitys new Centre for Science and Policy.

Q: What would you advise any startups – not just technology but any industry sector – to treat as priorities to get their companies off the ground?
Make sure that you have more money than you think you need (because it won’t be enough). Find people who can sort out the hygiene factors for you book-keeping, accounting, recruitment, contracts and so on are dealt with by people who do this kind of thing all the time and can do it much more quickly and effectively than you. Finally, think big you need to plan all the systems and processes that you are using so that they can scale-up. So, for example, it is worth investing in a little bit of software that makes something routine even if it costs you something in investment now because later on that process will free up time for you to do the important stuff.

Q: What was the biggest challenge you faced in starting your first major venture?
Making sure that all the processes work together and that no time was wasted. Quite often start-ups find it very difficult to plan and conserve resources and to do things in a systematic way so that they are efficient even as a small-scale. (This is based on my experience at Analysys).

Q: Do you think difficulty in engaging with funders was due to their lack of understanding or your inability to explain the proposition?
My first real experience of getting funding was with Abcam. Where the people knew me already it was very easy to explain what we were doing and for them to enthusiastically support us. When it came to pitching to people who see many of these business plans every day it was almost impossible to convince them that there was anything worthwhile in the proposition. So I think it’s neither the lack of understanding nor an inability to explain the proposition but the provenance of the message that is really important.

Internal Motivation The Entrepreneur

It always amazes me, looking back on my career as an entrepreneur, that I did my worst work when I was at the top of my game. That’s right; I also preformed my best when I was at my lowest. I used to think that I was just lazy when I was comfortable and my needs were being met, but the day came that I realized that this was the source of power and success.

If business was booming and resources were in abundance, I lost all desire to achieve. For the longest time I thought that only under desperation could I find creativity and motivation. If you took away all my money and locked me inside of a cockroach-infested, apartment, with nothing more than a cell phone, computer, Internet access, and 27 cans of beef stew without a can opener, you would be absolutely amazed at what I can get done. I would figure out how to open the cans of food with my cell phone, and within 8 days, deposits would start appearing in my PayPal account. I always figured this was simply my survival mechanism kicking in. As it turned out, I was neither lazy nor motivated by primitive survival instincts. It is actually a personality trait that few have and even fewer understand… including most of the people who have it.

This isn’t about being able to get stuff done when times are tough. I will spare you that speech, because lots of people have written about that one already. What I am talking about is where a person gets their motivation from. Is it generated from internally or externally? That is the million dollar question. A true entrepreneur is motivated from internal validation.

A normal person is motivated by externally. Most people without resources have nothing to draw validation from and they cannot get excited enough to accomplish starting a business. They cannot find the motivation to figure out how to build something out of nothing. Give that person a large office, nice business cards, and an important title and they tend to get to work and behave in a way that matches all that external validation. The biggest problem occurs when that external validation is given to them, rather than earned by them. They then boss people around without actually knowing what they are talking about. Under that poor guidance, the business will fall apart. This is why an average person fails at starting a business. They either can’t find the motivation to start from scratch or, if they get lucky and have some resources fall into their lap, they never learn how to build resources, which is what entrepreneurship is all about. The most common thing I see when non-entrepreneurs try to start companies is that money gets squandered to buy stuff that gives them external validation. These are the people who go bankrupt paying for huge office space that they do not need. The only thing they succeed at is building nothing out of something as they exhaust their resources without building mechanisms for profit. The funniest thing to me is that as the business fails, all of their external validation starts to disappear and with it their power at the very time they need it most. Their need for external validation guarantees their failure.

Then there exists a rare breed, the entrepreneur. This is the kind of person who truly can build something out of nothing. The entrepreneur gets his motivation from internal validation. It makes no difference to his self value if he is running things from a one-room apartment or the top floor of a skyscraper. He will be called arrogant and egotistical because he sees his value only inside of himself; he considers his circumstances and assets irrelevant. He believes that he has the power to create money out of nothing and his motivation for success is showing that belief to be true. For him, it’s not what he has; it is what he can do, and once that is done, he can have anything.

Now that you understand that how a true entrepreneur is motivated, I will explain what people see as laziness, loss of interest, and lack of motivation once their businesses get going. The entrepreneur gets excited about being able to do what more than 99% of the people on this planet cannot do, create something out of nothing. True entrepreneurs lose interest when the process turns into building something out of something because they see that as a goal anyone could accomplish, so it doesn’t feed their ego in the same way. They are excited by being able to do what others cannot. The true entrepreneur is a fire starter. After things get going, they pass operations off to the management they put in place and leave to start yet another business. And the best part is that they start that new business with nothing. They understand the power in doing this and know that the man who needs “no thing” has “no thing” holding him back. He gets his validation internally. That internal validation gets satisfaction from being able to create things out of “no thing” – that is the magic! That is the real entrepreneur at work.

Consider for a moment that the game of life is won not by getting more, but by being more. Focus on being more and you will see that making silly amounts of money and dating ridiculously attractive women comes easy.
